Just say: now we are not talking about a mattress topper, in fact, an additional thin mattress that is placed on the main mattress from above and can perform orthopedic and other functions. Toppers are made of latex foam, coconut flakes, foam rubber and their manufacture is comparable in complexity to the production of a thin mattress. We are talking about a mattress cover or cover. This device performs primarily a hygienic function. The mattress cover protects the mattress from dirt, it is easy to remove and wash. A mattress pad made of waterproof material protects the mattress from moisture. A cover or pad extends the life of the mattress and protects from many problems during its operation. This mattress cover is easy to sew with your own hands.

Mattress cover: choose fabric
Its functions will depend on the mattress pad material you have chosen:
- if the mattress cover should protect only from dirt and dust, choose dense cotton, linen, jacquard, thin terry cloth, bamboo;

- if moisture protective functions are also needed, take fabric or material with a waterproof lamination (for example, terry cloth with such a lamination exists);

- a quilted mattress cover with a thin layer of synthetic winterizer is good for winter, it retains heat (you can use ready-made material by adding a lining);

- the mattress cover with a layer of fleece and woolen fabric will have the same properties;

- a jacquard or silk mattress cover, on the contrary, is good in the heat, as it gives a feeling of coolness (but keep in mind that it is more difficult to work with silk, as well as linen on such a mattress cover will slip more strongly).

You can add a waterproof layer to any material or make the mattress cover double-sided - then choose the model pad, it is easy to make it multilayer.
It is better to sew a mattress cover from one layer of fabric.
Also note that you need to choose a fabric / material of sufficient width: the seam on the surface of the mattress cover can be felt through bedding.

It is better to sew such a model from dense fabric or to make it multilayer: the mattress cover pad should keep its shape well.
You will need:
- a centimeter tape, paper, a ruler and a pencil to build a pattern;
- crayon / pencil / marker for fabric;
- fabric of one or several types (depending on the number of layers of the mattress cover and its functions);
- rapeseed tape 4–5 cm longer than the perimeter of the mattress pad;
- wide elastic (3-4 cm wide);
- pins;
- scissors;
- sewing machine and thread.
1. Measure the mattress in length and width. Build a pattern on paper and transfer it to the fabric: the part (or the details - in the case of a multi-layer mattress cover) must accurately repeat the shape of your mattress, including rounding the corners. Add 1-2 cm from all sides. Cut out the part / parts.
2. If you are sewing a multi-layer mattress cover, fold all the details one on top of the other in the correct order. Trim the edges and pin all layers with pins to fix them well against each other.
3. Prepare the elastic bands. The length of the elastic bands depends on the thickness of your mattress: each of the four elastic bands will have to firmly hold the mattress cover on its corner of the mattress. Try the elastic to the mattress and determine the length.Cut 4 pieces of elastic of the same length and cut them diagonally.
4. Pin the elastic bands to the corners of the mattress cover from the inside, as shown in the photo.
5. Having folded the rapeseed tape in half lengthwise, pin it around the entire perimeter of the mattress cover - with it we will process the edges. Grab the ends of the gum.
6. Stitch the ribbon. The mattress cover is ready.

Such a mattress cover is better to sew from one layer of fabric.
You will need:
- fabric for mattress cover;
- paper, centimeter, ruler and pencil to build patterns;
- pencil / crayon / marker for fabric;
- iron;
- elastic tape (width 1−2 cm);
- safety pin;
- sewing machine and thread.
1. Measure your mattress and build a mattress cover pattern.
This is an example of a pattern for a mattress 200 cm long, 180 cm wide, 20 cm thick. Adjust the pattern according to the size of your mattress, leave the dimensions of the 15 cm turns up the same as in the diagram. Add allowances for 1.5-2 cm seams.
2. Transfer the pattern to the fabric and cut out the part of the mattress pad.
3. Fold the edges of the cutouts as shown in the photo, sew and process.
3. Fold and iron all the free edges of the mattress cover, as shown in the photo. So we form a gum drawer: the girdle should be wider than the gum you have chosen, at least 2-3 mm (you can slightly more).
4. Stitch the hem around the entire perimeter, as shown in the photo. Leave a hole about 4–5 cm wide. Make stitches at the beginning and end of the stitch.
5. Using a safety pin, put the elastic into the drawstring. Before you cut off the elastic, you can try on a cover on the mattress: the elastic should tighten the mattress cover quite tightly, but still give the opportunity to freely remove and put it on.
6. Cut the gum a few centimeters longer than necessary, fold its ends, pull them out of the drawstring a little and sew several times, closing the gum in a circle.
7. Now stitch the remaining hole. Mattress pad is ready!
